HISTORY OF TAX NEWS & TIPS

It all began in 1981.

In the fall of 1981 President Reagan was able to get one of the largest tax bills in history passed by Congress. Congress invented the "Cost Recovery System" and "Listed Property". That's when only cars & computers were "Listed".

Dave thought our clients should know how the new tax laws would affect them. Also he didn't want to spend hours explaining the new tax laws to each client during their appointments in early 1982. Dave was on summer vacation from his full time high school teaching position so he had time to set down and composed a client newsletter.

He gave it to our secretary who typed it. Dave was not much at typing -- he used the hunt & peck method (and still does).

The newsletter was photo copied on to 8 1/2 by 11 inch colored paper which we folded in half by hand and mailed to our clients in September of 1981.

The phone starting ringing as soon as our clients received & read the letter. Questions and more questions.

Late in November 1981 my father, who shared an office with Dave, asked "When are you going to write the next newsletter for the clients?"
Dave's reply was "No Way, It's too much work".
Since Thanksgiving break was soon approaching my dad told Dave he had time to write another newsletter. He was able to convince Dave another letter before the filing season would save us time by answering client question with another newsletter.

Dave bought himself an Olympic typewriter with 8K of memory and a spell checker. This was before we could afford a PC. During the four day Thanksgiving holiday Dave wrote the second client newsletter.

In December of 1981 Dave mentioned his client newsletter to another tax preparer. The preparer asked to see a copy of the letter. Two days later the preparer called Dave to ask if he could get 1500 copies for himself and others in his office to mail to their clients. Dave said yes and TAX NEWS & TIPS was born.

1982

During the tax season of 1982 our clients told us how much help the newsletter had been. They asked us when they could expect another issue. Many of our clients gave copies of the first two newsletters to family and friends who became our clients.

In March of 1982 Dave received a call from the tax preparer who had used the December 1981 newsletter asking when he was going to write another newsletter. He wanted to order copies again. During that tax season Dave received calls from other tax preparers in San Diego who had heard about his client newsletter. After they received samples they all called and ordered copies for their clients.

After the filing season Dave wrote the third issue of Tax News & Tips. The contents were expanded to four pages of text. Dave found a printer so the newsletter could be mailed "as is" or in a standard #10 envelope.

1982 - 1992

In 1982 we were asked to print another firm's name on the "basic" newsletter. This required Dave to get a printer to do a masthead design. Today, software has improved so much we are able to produce custom personalized mastheads in our office.

Dave & Larry began to do more lecturing at tax seminars. Both of them would carry a few copies of prior issues of Tax News & Tips.

By word-of-mouth and a little promotion the number of tax professionals using Tax News & Tips began to increase. All were located in the San Diego area. Dave & Larry did all the order taking, billing, masthead design, and shipping. Dave's VW-bug was soon packed to the sun roof with the boxes he took to UPS.

Dave began to speak at tax seminars throughout Southern California. Then in Northern California. Then at the CSEA Super Seminar in Las Vegas & Reno, for NATP, and enrolled agent chapters throughout the United States.

In October of 1983 we purchased our first computer. One of the first programs we purchased was dBase to be able to keep tract of the orders for Tax News & Tips. We still use dBase today. Those of you who ever used, or still use dBase, know how much time goes into writing dBase programs. We keep saying we are going to get some new software...but who has time to learn another new software program.

In 1992 Dave decided to see if there was a market for the newsletter outside of California. By this time Dave was retired from teaching and was working full time with the tax business. A marketing consultant was hired and Tax News & Tips was marketed nationwide.

TODAY

Heather handles orders, billings, masthead layouts, and everything else that is needed.

Patti handles marketing from her home in Iowa.

Cindy at Continuous Printing in Poway, California does the printing and shipping.

Larry does masthead layouts and everything else when Heather is busy and Dave is out of town lecturing at tax seminars. Including designing and maintaining our web site.

Dave writes the newsletter with help from Larry.

Today, tax professionals throughout the nation use Tax News & Tips as their client newsletter. Santa Claus' tax preparer who is located in North Pole, Alaska, uses Tax News & Tips.

One of the most often heard comments from other tax professional is the need to keep their clients advised of the need for tax planning all year. Many have told us they have attempted to write their own client newsletter and have discovered how much time it takes.

We hope those of you who are looking for a very good client tax newsletter will contact us.

Our customers tell us TAX NEWS & TIPS discusses the tax subjects their clients ask about.

The two most common responses from customers are (1) the quantity of consultations each issue generates and (2) the number of referrals they receive since sending TAX NEWS & TIPS to their clients.

Many who read TAX NEWS & TIPS appreciate the humor Dave attempts to add in each issue.
But not everyone. Several years ago Dave included an article on the IRS program for reporting tax cheats and included the IRS phone as 1-800-I-AM-A-FINK.
One of our customers called and told us we needed to correct the phone number in the next issue. One of her clients had called to report a ex-spouse to IRS and the phone number was a auto repair business.

Take a look, you may find TAX NEWS & TIPS will become your client tax newsletter.

Those of you who do use TAX NEWS & TIPS as your client tax newsletter --- THANK YOU.
